Lay
Formation Institute (formerly Lay Ministry)
A program of formation for active lay persons who
wish to deepen their knowledge of the Faith and develop their
pastoral abilities in order to be a greater leaven in their
parishes and in the world. The program involves nine weekends
(Friday evening to Saturday evening) a year for two years. In
most cases, students are sponsored by their parishes in exchange
for a commitment to some parish ministry or apostolate. The
weekends are held at several retreat facilities around the
Diocese, and a new class is started every two years. The
current cycle concludes in June of 2011, with a new cycle
beginning in the fall of 2011.

Leaders of Prayer–A course of study
by which lay persons are prepared and commissioned to serve
their parishes by bringing Holy Communion to the sick, by
conducting a prayer service on weekdays or on Sunday in the case
of the unforeseen or unavoidable absence of a priest, and by
leading parishioners in prayer at times of illness and death.
The program is carried out over four weekends at several retreat
facilities. Completion of the Lay Formation Institute is a
prerequisite for acceptance into the Leaders of Prayer program.
In addition, candidates must be sponsored by their parish
pastor. The next Leader of Prayer program will be held
beginning in early summer 2011.
